Back when I was a junior associate at a law firm, there was a partner at the firm who always had a “9 O’clock New Years Eve Party.” He would celebrate the New Year at 9:00 p.m. west coast time, when the east coast was ringing in the new year at midnight eastern time. Back then I was in my early twenties and I could not understand why anyone would want to do such a thing. Now, in my early forties with two children under 5 years old, I completely understand. It is nearly impossible to get a babysitter on New Years Eve so if we would like to celebrate, it has to be kid-friendly which leads to the 9 O’Clock New Years. So, I got to thinking; what would I include if I were planning a 9:00 O’clock New Years Eve Party? Here is what I came up with.
1. Party Hat-Making. My kids love arts & crafts and playing dress up. For us, making it to 9:00 p.m. would be a challenge. An activity like hat-making takes a little time and helps keep the kids occupied and out of trouble. I thought the image below was particularly cute. Click on the photo to follow the link.

2. Balloon drop. Kids love balloons. If you have the space for a balloon drop, the little ones will love it. Check pinterest.com for loads of instructions for creating your own out of materials you probably have on hand.
3. Appetizers. Skip dinner and opt for hearty, kid-friendly appetizers instead. Here are some great ideas. http://momstown.ca/recipe/12-new-years-eve-party-appetizer-recipes
4. Fancy party drink. Everyone loves a festive drink on New Years Eve. Try pouring milk into a champagne flute and putting a chocolate chip cookie on top.

5. Noise Makers. – My kids love noise, of all sorts. These paper plate shakers are particularly cute. If you would like to try to replicate, follow the link.

6. “New Years Eve” Sweet Toast – 12 Grapes. I have read that it is a popular tradition in Spain to ring in the new year with twelve grapes, one for each month of the year. This seems the perfect kid-friendly and sweet New Year’s Eve treat! We’ll definitely be trying this one.
